Outcome measurements were performed before and after the intervention, including the spirometry data, maximal inspiratory and expiratory pressures (PImax and PEmax), asthma control test, asthma control questionnaire, six-minute walk test, and three-day

Effect of caffeine on respiratory muscle strength and …

 · Six hours after caffeine administration compared to baseline, the median Pemax (p = 0.017), Pimax (p = 0.004), FRC (p < 0.001), CRS (p = 0.002) and RRS (p = 0.004) had significantly improved. Our results suggest that caffeine administration facilitates weaning of prematurely born infants from mechanical ventilation by improving respiratory muscle strength.

Low PEmax or PImax values might be due to poor motivation and technical difficulties such as mouth leakage. 30 In summary, 2 years after SARS onset, more than 50% of this highly selected group of SARS survivors had impairment in DL CO .

Nutritional status and mortality in chronic obstructive …

In the hospitalized group, predictors of respiratory mortality were elevated PaCO2 and low BMI, PImax, and diffusing capacity. PaO2 (measured on oxygen therapy), FEV1, PEmax, age, smoking behavior, and gender were not associated with survival. The

In COPD patients, the learning effect of PImax and PEmax has been evaluated in a study by Larson and colleagues [10] over a period of 4 weeks. The authors suggested that a substantial amount of practice was required to learn to do the test but the number of manoeuvres per session were not specified.

However, PImax and PEmax are volitional tests, and are poorly reproducible with an average coefficient of variation of 25%. The sniff manoeuvre is natural and probably easier to perform. Sniff pressure, and sniff transdiaphragmatic pressure are more reproducible and useful measure of diaphragmatic strength.

The aim of the study was the evaluation of respiratory muscle strength by measurement of maximal inspiratory (PImax) and expiratory (PEmax) pressures values. Results for 166 clinically normal subjects (79 female and 87 male) were obtained. The results were as follow: in woman PImax ranged 38-104 cm H2O, average 60 cm H2O, PEmax ranged 46-140 cm H2O average 87.5 cm H2O, in men PImax was …

PImax is an index of the strength of the diaphragm, while PEmax measures the strength of abdominal and intercostal muscles. These measurements have a role in the diagnosis and quantification of respiratory muscle weakness in patients who have dyspnoea and …
What’s normal about MIP and MEP?
 · The static respiratory pressures, Maximal Inspiratory Pressure (MIP or PIMAX) and Maximal Expiratory Pressure (MEP or PEMAX) are a way to non-invasively assess respiratory muscle strength. Respiratory muscle weakness is present in a number of conditions, most notably neuromuscular diseases and disorders, but also malnutrition, cardiovascular disease, polymyositis, sarcoid and COPD.
